A trailing stop is one of the most practical risk management tools available in MetaTrader 5.
It allows traders to protect profits automatically while giving trades room to grow.
In this page you can download the advanced MT5 Trailing Stop – High Low, which allows the stop loss to follow a recent candle High or Low.
What Is a Trailing Stop?
A trailing stop is a dynamic stop loss that automatically moves in your favor as price moves in your desired direction.
Unlike a fixed stop loss, which stays at the same price level unless manually modified, a trailing stop follows the market at a predefined distance or value.
Example of a simple trailing stop with fixed distance:
You buy EURUSD at 1.1000
You set a trailing stop distance of 30 pips
If price rises to 1.1030, your stop moves from 1.0970 to 1.1000
If price continues to 1.1060, your stop moves to 1.1030
If price reverses by 30 pips, the position closes automatically, locking in profit.
The key rule is simple. A trailing stop only moves in the direction of profit. It never moves backward.
Why Use a Trailing Stop?
There are several reasons traders rely on trailing stops in MT5:
- Profit protection: Trailing stops automatically secure gains without manual intervention.
- Letting profits run: Instead of closing trades too early, trailing stops allow participation in extended trends.
- Reducing emotional decisions: Automated stop adjustment removes the temptation to interfere unnecessarily.
- Structured risk management: It creates a mechanical exit rule rather than relying on guesswork.
Trailing stops are particularly useful in trending markets, breakout strategies, and systematic trading approaches.
The Native MT5 Trailing Stop Option
MetaTrader 5 includes a built-in trailing stop feature. You can activate it by:
Right-clicking on an open trade
Selecting “Trailing Stop”
Choosing a predefined number of points
However, there are limitations:
- MT5 must remain open for it to work
- It cannot filter by magic number
- It does not allow advanced logic
- It applies individually per trade
For traders running multiple strategies or EAs, these limitations can become restrictive.
MT5 Trailing Stop High Low
The MT4Gadgets Trailing Stop High-Low Expert Advisor provides more control and flexibility compared to the native MT5 option.
Instead of manually setting trailing stops per position, this tool can manage trailing stops automatically across positions with defined logic and filters.

How the Trailing Stop High Low Tool Works
The logic is simple and robust.
The tool monitors open positions continuously, every few seconds. Once price moves in your direction, the stop loss is moved to a recent candle low for buy order, candle high for sell orders, plus a buffer if you set it.
For long positions: Stop loss is set to the recent lowest low value below the price, minus the buffer.
For short positions: Stop loss is set to the recent highest high value above the price, plus the buffer.
Once set the parameters for the Highs and Lows, the EA will get the value and add the buffer, if set, then update the stop loss automatically.
The stop only moves forward. It never widens risk.
You can also define minimum profit before trailing begins, minimum distance constraints, and magic number filtering. These are advanced settings that allow the tool to be customizable to your needs.
This creates a clean and disciplined trailing structure.

MT5 Trailing Stop High Low Input Parameters
As mentioned before, the trailing stop high low for MT5 can be adapted to many strategies and scenarios, to do this it uses several input parameters that you can control.

Indicator Name
The indicator name is simply to give the EA a name, it doesn”t really affect the operations.
Apply To Long Positions
True or False if applying the automatic trailing to long positions, or not.
Apply To Short Positions
True or False if applying the automatic trailing to short positions, or not.
Filter by Matching Magic Number
You can enter the magic number of the strategy you want to trail, the EA will only apply this automatic trailing stop only to positions with the defined magic number and symbol of the chart where the trailing stop is loaded.
Leave as 0 – ZERO to apply to all magic numbers.
High Low Settings
There are a few inputs to set the Highs and Lows to your liking: Highs and Lows Timeframe, Lookback period, candle shift if you want to exclude recent candles.
The settings will define the Highs and Lows detection and a buffer to add to its value.
Please remember that the stop loss will always move favorably, closing to the price, and never backwards.
Minimum Distance From Price
This is a safety measure to avoid the stop loss getting too close to the current price. Minimum distance will set the minimum points of distance from the current price.
For example in a long position with minimum distance set to 100 and price at 1.02000, the stop loss cannot move closer to 1.01900.
Minimum Profit To Start Trailing
If you desire to move the stop loss only after a position is in a defined profit, this is for you. The trailing stop will not act until the position is profitable enough.
Example with a long trade, distance set to 500, minimum profit set to 800, open price 1.02000
- When price reaches 1.02500 the stop will not automatically trail yet, because the profit is 500, which is less than the 800 minimum
- Once the price reaches 1.02800 the trailing stop will trigger moving the stop to 1.02300 (1.02800 – 500 points)
Maximum Slippage
This is a common parameter to avoid excessing slippage in orders.
Verbose Logging
It is used mostly to increase the logging of event and troubleshoot issues that may happen.
These inputs allow traders to fine-tune trailing behavior according to strategy requirements.
Advantages of the Highs and Lows Trailing Stop Tool
- Magic number filtering: Manage only specific strategies without interfering with others.
