One of Metatrader lesser-known but highly useful features is the MT5 Portable Mode.
In this article, weβll explore what Metatrader MT5 Portable Mode is, why you might want to use it, and how to set it up.
What Is MT5 Portable Mode?
In normal cases, when you install MT5, user data like profiles, indicators, templates and logs, are stored in separate system folders. These folders are typically in the AppData directory on Windows, which is part of the user profile.
This can make it challenging to get together all of the necessary files during development, and performing other actions.
In Portable Mode, however, all these files stay within the installation folder of MT5.
MT5 Portable Mode is a special configuration that allows MetaTrader 5 to run as a self-contained application.
I repeat, with MT5 Portable Mode, all of your Metatrader files will be in a folder, and not spread around different paths.
This makes it easier to move the entire application with all its custom settings and files to different devices.

As you can see, after you install MT5 and run it for the first time, the program is located in the Program Files folder, and the Data Folder is located in the user profile AppData

Benefits Of Using MT5 Portable Mode?
Metatrader Portable Mode is a great feature to resolve several issues.
Using Portable Mode offers several advantages, the main of which here.
Easy Backup and Transfer
With everything stored in one place, backing up or moving your entire MT5 setup is simple.
You can just copy the folder to an external drive or cloud storage or your preferred location, everything is in one place.
Multiple Instances
You can run different MT5 setups with unique configurations by using separate portable installations.
Basically once you have a MT5 Portable Mode folder created, you could clone that and run separate instances, one at a time, or concurrently.
The terminals could run connected to different accounts and/or with different profiles.
Cleaner Uninstall
Deleting the MT5 folder removes everything related to that installation without leaving leftover files on your system.
Note thought, if you had run an installation of MT5 prior, you will still need to uninstall that first install.
No Hidden Files
Since no data is stored in system directories or user profile, you avoid having to dig through hidden folders like AppData.
How to Set Up MT5 Portable Mode
Setting up MT5 in Portable Mode is very easy:
1. Install MetaTrader 5

2. Locate the Metatrader folder
Locate the terminal.exe file in the MT5 installation directory. To find this you could right click the shortcut in your start menu and select “Open File Location”, it will likely be something similar to C:\Program Files\MetaTrader 5, the name might be different if you downloaded from the broker

3. Copy the Metatrader Folder
Go one folder up so you can see the full Metatrader folder, copy it and paste it to the new location or folder where you want to run the terminal from
4. Create and Edit the Shortcut:
In the ne folder where you placed Metatrader, create a shortcut of the terminal64.exe file (right-click > create shortcut)
Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and in the Target field, add the /portable flag at the end /portable
Pay attention to /portable being in lowercase
Name the shortcut your preferred name

5. Apply and Run:
Click Apply and OK. Launch MT5 using this modified shortcut.
Once in Portable Mode, all your settings, indicators, and expert advisors will remain inside the installation folder.

6. Repeat if needed
If you wish to create multiple instances of your MT5 software, repeat from step 2, copying the portable folder instead of the originally installed one.
When Should You Use MetaTrader 5 Portable Mode?
There are several cases where you would want to use MT5 Portable Mode, especially when working with trading automation.
Portable Mode is particularly useful for traders who:
- Use multiple devices and want consistent setups
- Use multiple instances of Metatrader with perhaps multiple accounts or brokers
- Use VPS and want to bring you full setup easily and quickly
- Develop indicators and expert advisors and need isolated testing environments
- Prefer keeping their trading platform neatly organized without system folder clutter
MT5 Portable and Expert Advisors
Metatrader 5 Portable works perfectly with custom indicators and Expert Advisors.
Any EA placed inside the MQL5 folder of the portable installation will function exactly the same as it would in a standard MT5 installation.
This means that automated trading tools such as trailing stop managers, order management systems, and account protection EAs can be deployed inside portable environments without any compatibility issues.
For traders running automated systems on multiple accounts, portable installations can provide a clean and organized way to manage these setups.
Each account can have its own dedicated MT5 environment with its own configuration and tools.
MT5 Portable for Strategy Testing
Another useful application of MT5 portable is strategy testing.
Algorithmic traders often maintain separate installations for development, optimization, and live trading.
Portable mode makes it easy to create isolated testing environments where strategy changes can be evaluated without affecting live trading systems.
For example, a trader might maintain one MT5 installation dedicated to strategy development while another instance runs stable production strategies.
This separation helps reduce operational risks.
Conclusion
MetaTrader 5 Portable Mode offers a flexible and efficient way to manage your trading environment.
Whether you are a casual trader or a developer, the ease of backup, portability, and clean organization make it an excellent choice.
If you value convenience and control over your trading setup, Portable Mode is worth exploring.

This method is not pure portable version as it’s still leave trace in %Roaming% folder named “MetaQuotes”. the contain of this folder should be placed inside the same folder where the MT5_terminal64.exe is or delete the the roaming folder after exit.
Thank you for the comment, the roaming is likely a residual of the first install no longer used once the portable parameter is applied
