In short, the Pip Value is the monetary value of the smallest change in the exchange rate of an instrument or asset.
Pip value is usually expressed in the currency used to fund your account.
Knowing the Pip Value is important to calculate other information about a trade, like stop loss and take profit.
Pip VS Tick Value
Before showing some of the most popular pairs and their values I need to clarify the difference between pip and tick (or point).
Pip is the traditional way of quantifying a quotation change.
Tick, or point, is the smallest quotation change that the broker processes.
In the last few years most brokers have switch to quoting most pairs with either 5 or 3 decimals, while in the past the same pairs were quoted with 4 or 2 decimals.
Due to this increase in decimals Pip and Tick are not always the same.
From now on in this article we will show the Tick value instead of the pip value, because that’s what most brokers use.
