What Is MT5 Grid EA and Martingale EA

GridX Pro EA is a grid and martingale EA for MT5 that will automatically trade for you.

Basically it is a trading bot, or trading advisor, that will trade based on a Grid of orders and if selected with Martingale progression.

The entry for this EA is randomised, meaning that there is no specific trigger to open a long or short position.

The strategy is based on collecting profits during market fluctuation, managing the risk through a grid of orders and position sizing with optional Martingale

What is a Grid System?

The Grid EA for MT5 includes an option to place orders based on a grid.

You can find more details about Grid systems in the article Grid Systems.

In short, the EA will place multiple orders at set intervals, taking the profit when possible or averaging the entry when price moves against the position.

What is a Martingale System?

The Martingale EA for MT5 has an option to use position sizing through Martingale.

Martingale is a practice coming from casino gambling, the most common is roulette.

It involves increasing the size of a bet, or in the case of trading the position size, after a losing trade.

This practice allows to recover the losses with the next winning trade.

You can read more about this in the Martingale Strategy article.

Risk With Grid and Martingale

One of the most controversial discussion in the trading community is the use and risk related to Grid and Martingale systems.

Some school of thoughts absolutely reject the idea of Grid and Martingale due to their risk of blowing trading accounts.

Some other school of thoughts adopt Grid and Martingale to profit from trading, with strict risk management.

The main risk related to Grids and Martingale is that if the market moves against the position significantly the traditional grid and Martingale will increase the loss until blowing the account.

However, there are ways to limit this occurrence and the MT5 Grid EA and Martingale EA has many options to adapt to such situations.

MT5 Grid EA and Martingale EA Order Management

The Grid EA and Martingale EA for MT5 is developed to manage single as well as multiple orders at once.

Grid systems always involve having multiple positions open at the same time, this is because losing positions are kept open until hedged or recovered.

Using the Grid systems and Martingale all long positions for an instruments are bundled together and treated as one, the same happens for short positions.

We call this a “basket” of orders, the basket closes when reaching the desired cumulative profit.

You can see in the image how often the bot closes multiple orders at the same time.

MT5 Grid EA and Martingale Trading Panel

The Grid and Martingale Trading Bot is equipped with useful feature to monitor and manage trading.

The trading panel provides an easy way to monitor the account and performance, as well as the current open orders and profit/loss.

The trading panel also allows to interact manually adding orders, closing orders or disabling/pausing trading.

Other than the trading panel, the bot will create and show on chart different lines in case there are open positions.

The BUY line shows the current average (AVG) entry price for all of the long positions combined. It also shows how many orders are open and the total position size.

The BUY TP line shows the Take Profit level the price needs to reach to close the Long Position Basket.

Similarly for short positions the SELL and SELL TP.

Performance of MT5 Grid and Martingale EA

With a reminder that using grids and Martingale has the risk of blowing accounts, if managed properly you can lower the probability of this to happen.

Below is an example of a backtest of AUDCAD for the 2024 year on a USD 1000 account.

While the Balance line (Blue) is steadily increasing, you can notice how the Equity line (green) below is quite irregular.

This is a very common equity line when using grid, because the losing positions are kept open while the price moves in the opposite direction, increasing the equity loss.

With more open orders open as price moves away, the average entry for the cumulative position adjusts following the price, until the price reaches the cumulative takes profit, and the equity line merges with the balance once again.

In the Deposit Load green bars at the bottom of the image you can also see the effect of the Martingale use, with the position increasing with more orders being open.

Something to note, many developer and sellers of trading robots often avoid showing the equity line, because it shows the usage of Grid/Martingale.

MT5 Grid EA and Martingale EA is more suitable for pairs and instruments that have a tendency to mean reversion.

It is highly suggested to thoroughly backtest the trading bot and use in a Demo account.

EA Settings

EA Name: EA Name is a simple text field to give a name to the bot, it doesn”t affect trading

Entry Signal

Enable Long Trading: True to enable buy orders, False to disable buy orders

Enable Short Trading: True to enable sell orders, False to disable sell orders

Wait Time Before New Orders: Wait time in minutes before opening a new order after a basket was closed

Low Limit For Long Orders: If set above zero this, buy orders will only be open above this level

High Limit For Long Orders: if set above zero, buy orders will only execute below this level

Low Limit For Short Orders: If set above zero this, sell orders will only be open above this level

High Limit For Short Orders: if set above zero, sell orders will only execute below this level

Entry Time Filter Settings

Entry Time Filter Enabled: True to enable the time filter, if true the start time and end time can be set to limit new order execution between a set time interval

Entry Start Time: Time after which new positions can be open

Entry End Time: Time before which new positions can be open

Risk Management Settings

Starting Position Size: The initial position size for the first order in the basket

Max Position Size: The maximum position size for any order

Take Profit Type: The type of take profit to use, “CURRENCY UNIT” means in monetary value in your account currency, “POINTS” means points of price movement (usually 10 points = 1 pip), “PERCENTAGE OF PRICE” means based on percentage of price movement.

Take Profit Units: The units of profit to reach to close the basket. For example if this is set to 5, if profit type it CURRENCY UNIT and your account is in USD the basket will close at 5 USD cumulative profit, if POINTS the basket will close if price moves 5 points in the direction of the position, if PERCENTAGE OF PRICE the basket will close when price moves 5% from the average entry price.

Max Loss That Would Trigger Position Close: If set above zero this is the max loss in % of balance to trigger the closure of all positions.

Terminate The Robot If Max Loss Is Reached: If Max Loss above zero and this is True the bot will stop when reaching the Max loss.

Use Cost Averaging (CA) For Losing Trades: This enables the grid system, which will add to losing positions to adapt the average entry price.

Profit Multiplier For Each Added CA Order: This is a multiplier for the profit in case of added orders, for example if this is 2 the profit target will be multiplied by 2 per each additional order in the basket.

Cost Averaging Gap Type: This is the type of “gap” or “leg” for the grid, “POINTS” will set the gap in points, “PERCENTAGE” will set the gap in percentage.

Cost Averaging Gap Units: This is the actual gap, for example if this is 250 and Gap Type POINTS, the first additional order to the basket will be added if the price moves 250 points away from the previous entry. Another example if this is set to 2 and Gap Type PERCENTAGE then the next order will open if the price moves 2% away from the previous entry.

Cost Averaging Gap Multiplier: If set to zero this will not affect the grid and all gaps/legs will be equally distant from each other. If set above zero this will change the leg for the next order multiplying the previous leg by the number of orders open. Example Multiplier 2 and Gap 250 POINTS means that the second order will trigger 250 points away from the original entry price and the third order will open if the price moves away 500 points (250×2) from the second order, widening the grid (if >1).

Cost Averaging Position Increment Mode: This enables Martingale, “NO INCREMENT” means all orders in the basket will have the same size, “MULTIPLIER” means that each additional order will have a lot size of the previous order in the basket multiplied by the factor set, “ADDITION” instead will have each additional order with the lot size of the previous order plus the factor set.

Cost Averaging Position Increment Factor: This is the multiplier or addition factor for the positions in the basket. For example if set to 3 and Increment Mode MULTIPLIER the second order will be 3 x the lot size of the first order. The third order will be 3 x the lot size of the second order and so forth.

Cost Averaging Rebuy Interval Hours: If above zero this allows to add a position to a basket after a set amount of hours, is useful in situations where an instrument stagnate for a long time on a price level without significant movement. For example is this is 4 the bot will add an order after 4 hours since the last order added to the basket.

Cost Averaging Max Basket Duration In Hours: If above zero this sets a max duration for the entire basket, effectively giving an “expiry” to the position. Example if set to 48, the basket will close after 48 hours since the first open order in the basket. Regardless if in profit or loss.

Cost Averaging Max Orders: If above zero this sets a maximum limit to the orders in a basket. Example if set to 6 a basket will not be able to have more that 6 orders in it.

Close Oldest Loser After Orders: If above zero this will close the oldest order when adding a new one to a basket. Example if set to 5, the bot will close the first order when adding the 6th order. It will then close the second order when adding the 7th and so on.

Don”t Add DCA Orders Outside Of The Grid Boundaries: If True this will block the cost average/grid system from adding orders when outside of the range set in the entry settings.

Close The Basket Of Orders Outside Of the Grid Boundaries: If true this will close the basket when price goes outside the range set in the entry settings.
